I'm always looking for new books to read, but it can be hard to find new stuff on Amazon...there is a look of CR@P out there....so I thought I'd start a few forum threads listing out some of may favorite books in the different genres - if you have any that you can recommend please add to the list..

I kind of lost interest while reading Name of the wind, and for tolkien the movies were enough for me.

Not sure, was midway through and the MC wasn't really making me feel engaged, and i wont deny that tolkien is a classic, but the movies didn't draw me in enough to make me want to read the books.

romance and sex scenes being like 50 shades of grey is a good thing? thanks, but no thanks.

Tried to read Tolkien about 20 years ago - remember reading about the first 17 pages of The Hobbit - and put the book down - I just couldn't read it......watched the first 3 movies based off the books and was bored the entire time......

Another series you may enjoy - was first published back in the early '80s, and is now available on Kindle.....excellent series, 7 books in total, unfortunately the author died before writing the last book, and the last book was written by his wife (I think)

Also the Borderlands series by Lorna Freeman - it's very hard to track down ebook copies of this series....was the start of a good series with the first 3 books, but unfortunately the author had a dispute with her publisher and has not written / released any books since 2010

Also the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher....for a series that was written as a Bet it was really good.....for those of you that don't know, Jim got into an arguement with someone online about whether he could write a good book based off a stupid idea...he upped the anti by betting that he could write a book on 2 totally different ideas - he was challenged to write a book based on the ideas of Pokemon and a Lost Roman Legion....and the Codex Alera series was born

The Belgariad & Malloreon series by David Eddings and the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffery were the series that first got me hooked on reading fantasy as a young teenager.....but they're not what I would recommend for adult readers today - they are still good series but more suited to a young audience just being introduced to the genre IMO.

I enjoyed the Riftwar saga by Raymon E. Feist and the subsequent spin-off series, and used to buy each new book (many times in Hardcover) when released - until he started to kill off my favorite characters from the first books - I gave up on the books when he killed off Jimmy the Hand - I don't think I've even gone back and re-read any of the previous books since that happened.

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant drove me nuts - just consistent whining from the MC about him being sick and not believing anything he saw.

Ditto on Riftwar.

As far as Covenant: Loved the first 3, in part because TC was such a despicable hero. It was just very different, and in part because when the first three were first published they had this gold box on the back with a review of the books and it called it the "best in modern adult fantasy" and that enticed and frightened me at the bookstore. I looked at it time and time again before getting brave enough to read it. I was in Jr. High, and that word "adult fantasy" made me fear it was porn, and I was scared to death my parents would see that on the back and think I was reading something I shouldn't be. This was probably 1979 when book 3 was published.

Now of course, other than the rape scene, I don't recall much sex, but it really was not something suitable for younger audience in terms of overall themes.

I went into shock when the second trilogy started appearing because for some reason I thought the first three were "ancient history" and didn't realize it had only been about a year between the first and third trilogy. So when I saw it in hardback, I flipped my mind and used every penny to buy it.

It took everything I had to get through the second trilogy. If TC was dark, Linden Avery was a black hole of miasma. It was like pulling teeth to read. I never did read the third quadrology which were written much later.

have you tried the Journey to Wudang series, Dark Heavens series, Celestial Battle series by Kyle Chan??

They are a bit different from the others that I listed.....based on Chinese mythology.....lots of Chinese demons, Gods, Demi-Gods, Bodas, Ancestors, and Shen (animal and nature spirits), etc.....but set in modern day Hong Kong...and one of the main characters is actually the Chinese God of Martial Arts...so lots of fighting and various martial art related stuff

The Author is actually from my home city, but lived in Hong Kong for 10 years with her husband....
